Introduction
Gulliver’s Travels, Jonathan Swift’s political satire, presents an exploitation of the 18th century government. Swift employs four different fantasy worlds—Lilliput, Brodingnag, Laputa, and the country of the Houyhnhnms— to explore the political conflict in England whilst arguing the imperfections in humanity and government. This site analyzes the literary piece itself and argues the parallelism of perception versus reality that Swift uses in each of Gulliver’s travels; Swift calls attention to the overly-familiar dilemmas and acts of stupidity of government and humanity that society is overlooking.

Thesis
The fictional societies that Gulliver fortuitously experiences in his travels symbolize conflicts that Swift conceptualizes within the Tory and Whig debate, the governments involvement in the enlightenment, and humans inability to be truly humane.

About Us

The act of traveling and enduring changes in one’s environment is something that we as a group understand relatively well at this time in our life. We are a group of five freshmen at the Georgia Institute of Technology, a school ranked as the seventh public institution in the nation. This website is an analysis of the assigned reading, Gulliver’s Travels in Dr. Crystal Lake’s English 1101 class for the Freshman Summer Semester of 2009. Starting college is an enduring transition for all students as is the transition that Gulliver undergoes while traveling to each of the islands.
